What you’ll need:
- granulated white and/or brown sugar
- water
- bowl
- teaspoon
- ice cube tray or candy mold
- Pour about 1/2 cup of sugar into a bowl.
- Use a teaspoon to pour small amounts of water on the sugar, little by little, and mix until it is a paste-like consistency. Make sure the sugar doesn’t melt during this process.
- Fill the sugar-water-paste into ice cube trays, about half-way full, and press tight into the mold.
- Let dry overnight.
- Carefully remove the sugar cube from the ice cube tray.
- Enjoy!
I’m partying here! ♥

They look really lovely — I’ll have to give them a go but it might mean a trip to ikea first for a icecube tray!
Sweet! Two of my granddaughters live a ways from us and when they come to visit they love to have tea in our special tea cups, ALWAYS with sugar cubes. Yours came out so cute! They would think this idea so fun!
Nice stopping by to visit with you!

I love DIY sugar cubes … so many possibilities for cute shapes. I love the idea of putting them out with iced tea … I’ve only ever thought of hot.
I once made a knock-off (from Sur La Table) of heart sugar cubes that fit on the side of a cup. They were really fun. You can see them here: http://6dukes.blogspot.com/2008/01/unveiling.html.

This is such a great idea! Of course, it now gives me an excuse to buy cute ice cube trays — it is an addiction — lol.
Hugs, antonella :-)
Saw these over on Tidy Mom — they’re ridiculously cute! So sweet…
These are completely adorable! Do you think they might work re-crushed on the side of the glass and stirred into smoothies? I tend to take my smoothies unsweetened and a lot of my friends fail to see the appeal.
Either way, thank you for the tutorial, I’ll be sure to do this sometime!
These are adorable! My kids think it is a huge treat to get a sugar cube at a “tea party” and they would really love shaped ones. I am featuring these on my site tomorrow.

I’m defiantly going to have a go at this, its such an creative idea. I’d probably use chocolate moulds instead as they are slightly smaller than ice cube moulds.
Awesome idea, I am sure gonna make it!
nice! how long can I keep the sugar cubes?

I like this idea and will have to try it for my mother/daughter tea I do in May. It’s almost a year away but I’m sure I’ll find other times to make them.
He he, these are so cute! Such a smart and crafty way to jazzy up your sugar bowl for when you have someone over for a cup of tea. Would put a smile on anybody’s face!
Oh, very nice idea! :) I added some vanilla powder in white sugar, put this hearts on jar. And it will be my wedding present for friends. Thank you!
@ Zhe: Unfortunately I couldn’t find an email-address or blog to answer to your sweet comment. :)
Thank you very much!!
Oh, sorry! It’s my e-mail: anastasiazhe@gmail.com, this is my blog: http://anastasiazhe.tumblr.com/ and post with photos there.
You know, I know one little secret. If you put sugar on heat-resistant form, you can make cubes faster. You just need to bake it 10 minutes on 180 degrees :)
I really like this and I don’t know if someone already mensioned it, but it is also nice to add one drop of foodcoloring! Think of red/green for X-mas etc.
Astrid
I added 5 drops of food coloring to make the deep red and deep green sugar cubes that I did for this year’s gift exchange.
Just a question, does anyone know how to deal with accidentally adding too much water to the sugar? Do I just expect an increase in drying time.
I would try adding more sugar to it and also to increase the drying time. I hope this helps! :)
xo!
I saw this featured on Cut Out + Keep and just wanted to stop by and tell you that these sugar cubes look amazing! I definitely want to try to make them especially since my roommate wants to have a tea party at our apartment some time during the semester. These would be perfect!
Thanks for sharing! :)
@ Sarah: Thank you so much for your sweet comment! :) Unfortunately I couldn’t find an email address attached to reply personally, but I hope you’ll still read this. xo!

such a great idea, i am definately doing this!

Hi–would you mind sharing where you got your beautiful mini mold pans? These are such a lovely, quaint idea. Thank you!
What a fabulous idea!!
Hi, innovating idea! Just a question, how do I keep ants away from this sweet craft?
Following my previous comment, I tried making them already but they fall apart when I try to get them out of their moulds. Is it because it’s not dry enough yet? Exactly what is the consistency the mixture should be before putting it into the moulds? Like gooey liquid-ish or ? Please help! Many thanks!
Thank you for your comments, Fiona!
I’m sorry to hear that the sugar cubes are falling apart when you take them out of the moulds. The consistency is more gooey and make sure you let them dry completely before removing them from the moulds.
I hope this helps! :)
Let me know if you have any more questions.
PS: To keep the ants away, just store them in the fridge or in an airtight container.
xo! Vanessa
hi Fiona and Vanessa, I’m having the same problem! I let them dry 3 days in shallow candy molds and they still fell apart, if I could get them out at all. I’m thinking of trying the silicon molds, maybe they’ll pop out easier.
I am really sorry to hear your sugar cubes didn’t make it out of the moulds in one. I would definitely suggest using silicone forms. They are a lot more flexible. I used the IKEA ones without problems. I hope this helps! :) xo!
So nice!!!

These are really great. I made some with candy molds in the shape of presents and bells for the neighbors. They have a little coffee with their sugar. I put them in a container and made a saying for the top: Homemade Sugar Cubes — To make everything a little sweeter. My first ones wouldn’t come out of the mold so I used just a little water and they came right out without even drying them. Then I let them dry several hours on waxed paper. These along with some homemade cookies are my gift to the neighbors.
So cute! These would actually make great gifts for my horsey friends and something fun for the kids to make to give our own horses treats :o) Thank you for sharing!

My mom and I did this several years ago for a St. Patrick’s Day tea we were hosting, making little shamrock sugar cubes that we dyed green. They came out SO adorable! The ladies loved them. However, once we dropped them in the tea it turned the tea into an unappealing color…looked a bit like dirty sewer water (it didn’t help that we all had address cream to our tea, but cream makes it so yummy!). So just be really careful if you add color because it will change the color of your beverage. Otherwise it’s a fun idea. I love what someone posted about using these as a gift. :)
Could you use colored sugar? Like what you would use to sprinkle on cookies?
I will try this with my preschool classes. We make sugar cube igloos in the winter. Now we can have custom sized cubes. So fun!
So cute! Never realized this is how they make them.
Now I almost wish I took sugar in my coffee/tea just so I could have an excuse to make these!
oh my goodness this couldn’t be any cuter. LOVE!
For Valentines Day this year, I am making traditional rectangular sugar cubes with citrus bitters and putting them in a jar and gifting with a bottle of Champagne for instant cocktails.
Omg Lindsey I wish I was on your gift list lol
Hi there…these are too gorgeous!!!This might seem like a silly question, but do they melt when left out of the freezer or are the bind together by the sugar?
I love these sugar cubes…so cute!!! :)
love this, can’t wait to try it!
I want to have a tea party now.

Love them! Thanks for sharing. Question…if you go with the food coloring, would you color the water, or add them both to the sugar separately?
Thanks!
I could have swore I had these pinned already!! But I don’t see them. I’m so glad you came by and linked up so I didn’t miss out. These are ADORABLE!! I want to make a bunch during Christmas time. They would even be pretty in a jar just as a decoration! Thanks so much for linking up at my party, Vanessa!!

Hmm.. That actually sounds like yummy idea! Thanks a bunch!

Such a cute idea, I do something similar with holiday candy molds and butter, just soften the butter, press into mold and chill! Then pop out decorative butter patties for your holiday meal, miniature turkeys foe Thanksgiing, trees for Christmas, etc!
Thank you so much, Janice! :)
That is such a cute idea to use decorative butter for the next Christmas dinner!
I hope you’re having a great week so far!

Where can I purchase candy molds similar to the one used in this tutorial?
I found those molds at IKEA — they’re actually ice cube trays. ;)
Hope that helps.
xo! Vanessa
I actually tried these after I saw this. Followed the recipe and directions.
They didn’t set up and took three days to dry out. When I tried to remove them from the molds, they cracked and broke apart.
Sadly, this was not one that worked for me.
Hey Libbie,
I’m so sorry to hear the sugar cubes didn’t turn out right for you. I always have a few break when you try to get them out of the mold, but it shouldn’t be all of them.. Maybe try it again with using a little less water. The sugar shouldn’t dissolve, just stick together. I hope that will help.
Have a wonderful remaining week!
xo’s from Germany,
Vanessa
Libbie I’ve made some. My process is a bit different, I made a tutorial in a pdf file (with other two recipes). You can find it here . I make the paste with a little water until it resembles coarse sand, as Vanessa said too much will not work, but I press it tightly and let it set only for a minute, then take them out of the mold it and let it dry. If you want the figure to be more detailed then add a bit of confectioner’s sugar.
Vanessa, thanks for the tutorial. I like how you made some from brown sugar, they look lovely. Mine were colored and some had a bit of flavoring, they are wonderful for tea (or coffee if you use vanilla or cocoa). Also it’s a good idea to use ice cube trays, I’ll have to experiment with that, there come in so many cute shapes. Nice blog, I’ll keep visiting ;)
Sandra recently posted..Working
These are so adorable!! Can you tell me how big each “cube” is? I was trying to order the IKEA trays on eBay, but I think the ones they show are for larger ice-cube sized flowers and hearts. So I’m still working on getting the right molds.
Thank you!
Hey Susan!
The cubes are about 1 inch in diameter. If you’d like smaller sugar cubes you may want to pick up some chocolate candy molds instead. :)
I hope this helps!
Have a wonderful week!
xo! Vanessa
They look just sooooooooo cute :) I want to make them too!!
Thank you so much! :)
xo! Vanessa
Cute idea but “carefully remove” from the candy molds isn’t working for me. Any suggestions?
Hey Melissa!
I’m so sorry to hear your sugar cubes are not making it out of the molds in one piece..
The problem might be that they are still to moist. Maybe try it again with a little less water.
I hope this helps.
Happy Holidays!
xo! Vanessa
Ilove this idea. Beautiful sugar cubes in an organza gift bag make an awesome gift which costs almost nothing to make.
What a fantastic idea especially using brown and white sugar. I love the fact that I will be able to get all different shapes. Thank you!
