carnations from {nifty thrifty things}

Welcome to this week’s {floral friday}!

These beautiful carnations were a Birthday gift from my mom. I love the way she captured their beauty and am in love with the color! They’re so fragile, yet powerful looking..

A few facts about carnations:

  • Carnations got their scientific name Dianthus from two Greek words — “dios”, referring to the god Zeus, and “anthos”, meaning flower. Carnations are thus known as the “The Flowers of God”.
  • Carnation flowers have become symbolic of mother’s love and also of Mother’s Day. {source}
  • Carnation is a perennial plant that comes in many colors including yellow, purple, mauve, maroon, red, peach, pink and white, each depicting different emotion.
  • Red carnation is symbolic of deep love or admiration, depending on the depth of the red. Pink symbolizes mother’s love, purple color indicates capriciousness, white color means pure love, striped carnation means regret or refusal and yellow represents dejection.
  • The carnation is the birth flower for those born in the month of January. {source}

recycled: record bowl from {nifty thrifty things}

This is such a fun and easy project! My hubby, who is a total record nerd, came up with the idea of making record bowls. So, I love this project especially, since we got to be crafty together. :)

We found a couple of old (and free) records at a resale store and got to “work”.

What you’ll need:

  • an old record
  • an oven-safe bowl
  • a baking sheet
  • oven mitts or gloves
  • an oven

How to:

  1. Preheat your oven to 210°F (100°C)
  2. Put the oven-safe bowl onto the baking sheet, facing down.
  3. Center the record on top of the bowl.
  4. Close the oven and watch the record until it starts to warp.
  5. Take out the baking sheet and, using mitts or gloves, press down the record
  6. Hold your record in place until it starts to harden.
  7. The record will cool very fast, so you need to hurry a little to shape it. If you’re not happy with the shape, just pop it back in the oven for a little bit and start over. :)
