paper mache tea light from {nifty thrifty things}

Ever since I started working full-time, I haven’t really found much time anymore to craft with my mom..

A few weeks ago, though, we had her over for dinner and crafts. Well, while the hubby made dinner (yummy tacos), my mom and I got crafty. The perfect evening! ;)

We (tried to make) made paper mache tea lights. Well, tea lights (plural), turned into tea light (singular).. Out of the 6 tea lights we made, only one survived.
That’s nothing new to me and my mom, though. We fail at crafting from time to time, hehe.

We learned from our mistake and rescued one of the tea lights. The problem was, that we didn’t use anything to prevent the paper from sticking to the glass..

What you’ll need:

  • paper
  • wallpaper paste
  • a bowl or glass
  • gold leaf
  • gold leaf adhesive
  • a brush

How to:

  1. Mix the wallpaper paste.
  2. Tear the paper in small strips.
  3. Important (where we messed up ;) ): Use Vaseline and cover the bowl or glass to make sure the paper doesn’t stick to it too much.
  4. Adhere the paper strips to the glass or bowl. Apply two to three layers.
  5. Place the glass or bowl in the microwave. Check every few seconds to see if it tried.
  6. Remove from microwave & use oven mitts to take off the paper mache top.
  7. Let cool off.
  8. Brush on gold leaf adhesive to the inside of the paper mache tea light.
  9. Carefully place the gold leaf sheets on the adhesive covered parts, covering the whole inside.
  10. Use a soft brush to brush off the excess gold leaf.
  11. Optional: Paint the outside with chalk paint.
  12. Place a tea light inside and enjoy the cozy light. :)

kalanchoe from {nifty thrifty things}

Welcome to this week’s {floral friday}!

Happy Friday! I hope y’all will have a great start into the weekend! Do you have anything fun planned?

This week’s flower is the Kalanchoe — a plant I bought during Christmas-time. Almost two months later it’s still holding up well, as you can see. :)

A few facts about the Kalanchoe:

  • The Kalanchoe is native to Madagascar.
  • They are succulents like cacti.
  • The Kalanchoe is easy to care for and comes in great variety of colors.
  • They are toxic! Kalanchoe species contain a substance known as bufadienolide cardiac glycosides which can cause cardiac poisoning.
  • They open their flowers by growing new cells on the inner surface of petals, thus forcing them outwards. {source}

{guest post: lil’ luna — easy bruschetta}

Lil' Luna Guest Post Header

Hi there Nifty Thrifty friends!! Kristyn from Lil’ Luna here. I’m so excited to be doing a guest post for Vanessa. The girl is my favorite, and I use her for all my cute design needs!! Isn’t she so stinkin’ talented? I sure think so. :)

Well, today I am going to be sharing with you a super easy and quick appetizer idea. My family is huge on appetizers, and we are always looking for good ones. This Easy Bruschetta recipe happens to be one of those…

Not only is it DELICIOUS, but it is so simple to make. :)

Here is how you can make it too:

EASY HOMEMADE BRUSCHETTA:

INGREDIENTS:

- 1 — 32 oz. can Italian Diced Tomatoes

- 6 cloves Garlic

- 4 TB Olive Oil

- 3/4 cup basil

DIRECTIONS:

1. Put all ingredients in a bowl and mix right before serving.

For easy bread pieces to go with the bruschetta, I’ll show what we do…

1. Buy hogi sandwich rolls. Cut in slices and place on a cookie sheet.

2. Butter slices and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Broil on HIGH for 2–5 minutes (dependent on how fast and hot your oven is).

Serve the bread pieces with your bruschetta.

Talk about an easy, quick and yummy appetizer! I promise you’ll love this.

It is a family favorite that can be made so easily and tastes so good!

For more fun recipes as well as some great crafts, printables and tutorials come on over to Lil’ Luna to say hi. I’d love to see you!!

ENJOY!

PS — Thanks for having me, Vanessa!
