{floral friday #45}

Last week the hubby and I went to the botanical garden here in Bremen and I tried out my new lens. (Expect to see more floral fridays with pics from the botanical garden! haha)

So, I stumbled upon this interesting looking flower: Edgeworthia papyrifera. Also known as oriental paper bush.

A few facts about the oriental paper bush:

  • The oriental paperbush is native to China and Nepal, and can also be found in Japan.
  • The plant grows in forests, on scrubby slopes and near streams.
  • It has papery, cinnamon-colored bark and has been used for centuries in its native countries for making high quality paper, especially Japanese banknotes - hence its common name, 'paper bush'. {source}
  • Edgeworthia is named after Michael Pakenham Edgeworth (1812-81), a part-time botanist, plant collector and employee of the East India Co.
  • The flowers are fragrant and open from their buds in late winter.
