{floral friday #5}

Welcome to another floral friday!

This week I brought home a few stems of a flower called “Milchstern” (1:1 translation from the German word is “milk star”) from our local flower market. I tried looking up the English word for it and am to 99% sure these pretty orange blooms are called sun star. Please correct me if I’m wrong. ;)

A few facts about the sun star:
  • the sun star is a bulbous flowering plant of the family of hyacinthaceae and order of asparagales. (They do look a little like flowering asparagus! ;) )
  • its origin is South Africa.
  • they flower in Winter and Spring.
  • the scientific name is ornithogalum dubium. The Greek word ornis means bird and gala stands for milk.
