{guest post: the bold abode}

Hello to all you groovy {nifty thrifty things} readers!
Hi!  It’s Gwen from The Bold Abode.
I am stoked beyond belief to be here today!  Mountains of  thanks to Vanessa for allowing me the opportunity to have a chat with you guys!  I’ve so enjoyed Vanessa and her blog; She is enormously creative and has an eye for the fabulous.  {Case in Point: Floral Friday. I mean, a botany lesson each week? Looove it!}
Me? Well,  I am the wife of a super cool Muppet T-shirt wearin’ kinda guy and a full-time mom to two high-powered, lego- lovin’ boys.
And we all live together in a Yellow Submarine.
Well.…not reaaaally, but it is a very BRIGHT home!
At any rate, two years ago, my husband, Morgan, and I fiiiiiinally took the plunge into the deep waters of home-ownership. We’ve always rented, so  I’ve never had free reign to do what I want. I had a LOT to do and VERY little to work with!
I’m slowly creeping my way through our house with the paint brush, and, right now, I’m working in the Master Bedroom.
Now, I seriously have almost NO cash to use, so what in the world am I supposed to do?  My only option?  Look for some Free Stuff!
Visions of headboards have been dancing in my dreams, and, wouldn’t ya know it~ about two weeks ago, I came across this…

You see it, right?
Yay!   It’s a headboard.  Kinda like Michelangelo and a piece of marble…
O.K. Maybe comparing myself to Michelangelo is a teeensy bit of a stretch. All Right.  A big, massive, enormous, monstrous, GARGANTUAN stretch. But a little part of me felt like him, just a wee bit.

And OF COURSE, one project leads to another, right?
Be honest!  It’s happened to you, I just know it!
I mean, look at that wall.  It’s screaming out for some color.  Every room in the house was painted that Builder’s White.  Quick! Someone get me a can of spray paint!
Ummm, Totally joking!   Well, Morgan and I had The Great Paint Debate over this one.  In the end, bless it!  We agreed.  (Can you hear the birds singin? tweedle-deedle-dee)
The same week of the little discussion we had about paint, Morgan had to take a trip to Altanta. GA.  Oh, boy!  How I wish I could have gone.  You see, I live in a wee bit smaller town than the great city of Atlanta, so I swoon over those big bright lights!
So, the next best thing?  Browse the IKEA website and then send yo’ spouse!
I’ve been drooling over these Ekby Mans Brackets for a while. I mean, red polka dotted brackets.  They just make me giggle…
I just happened to have some reclaimed 2x8s.  So with two sets of these Ekby Mans Brackets,  I attempted to make some chunky shelves to flank our nutty new bed.

Now… I know what you’re thinking.  You’re thinking, “You made it out of Ikea with just those brackets?”
Nope.  Not a Chance.  Every re-purposed Truss o’ a Headboard needs some super cool wall lights, right?
These HUSVIK Wall/Reading lamps fit the bill perfectly!
So, you may ask?  How thrifty was it, Gwen?  Well, let me just tell ya…
Truss: FREE
Carriage Bolts: $13
Screws: $4
Sand paper: $10
Total:  $27 for a truly one of a kind headboard!  I luuuuv it!
Sherwin Williams Cole de ‘Azur, on sale 40% off: $26
Paint supplies: $15
Total: $41  and I have a LOT of paint left over for another cool project!
Chunky Shelves
Ekby Mans Brackets from Ikea: $5.00 per set.  Yes, that’s right… five bucks… Seriously..$2.50 a bracket!
Wood for shelves: FREE
Total: 10 smakeroos
Wall lamps
HUSVIK Wall/Reading lamp: $30 each  (O.K. This was a bit of a splurge for us but totally worth it!)
The Grand Total?  $138.  For an entirely new Master Bedroom.

How’s that for thrifty?
But, is it Nifty?
I hope you’ll visit me, and let me know what you think!
Wild and wooly thanks to Vanessa for having me.  It’s been a real pleasure writing this post!
May your days be filled with piles and piles of {nifty thrifty things}!
Oh, and bis spater! ~~ That means “See ya later, Alligator!”

that is a heck of rock-my-socks-off headboard. it makes me want to comment in poetry form but…i’m spent…and have to save some creative juices for my own post!!

and did it just happen to fit the window? hmmm. and where, exactly, does one pick up a leftover truss? hmmm.

still…you have some serious vision, chick. like totally.
